Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating a suspected fraud at a post office in Gorey, Co Wexford.
Some €1.5 million worth of financial irregularities were reportedly discovered during an internal audit by An Post on Wednesday.
An Post then alerted gardaí in Wexford.
A Garda spokesman said they are now investigating an allegation of misappropriation of funds.
It is understood that officers from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation will be involved in the investigation.
An Post said in a statement the post office in Gorey remains open for business as usual. "The investigation does not impact in any way on customers, retail or mail services," it said.
While gardaí had been concerned about the welfare of a staff member who had not been seen for several days, it is understood he is no longer missing. No arrests have been made.
