It is believed gardai were contacted by Ms Neligan's friends when she didn't show up for a number of appointments.

The apartment was sealed off, and State Pathologist Marie Cassidy carried out an initial examination last night. She is expected to carry out a full postmortem later today.

It is believed the woman died of multiple stab wounds.

The man was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice act. He can be held there for a total of 24 hours before being either released or charged.

Mr Neligan is one of the State's most distinguished doctors. He was a consultant cardiac surgeon at Dublin's Mater hospital from 1971 until 2002 and at Crumlin Children's Hospital from 1974 until 2002. He is also one of the founders of the Blackrock Clinic.
