Forty leading church people from all the major denominations have come together to support an initiative to organise a distinctively Christian contribution to the peace process.
The United Prayer Initiative was launched by the YMCA, the Christian Renewal Centre and the Evangelical Catholic Initiative at a Belfast hotel yesterday. The organisers have urged Christians in Ireland to follow the example of Christians in South Africa who, during the negotiations which led to the end of apartheid, undertook to pray regularly for two years for their leaders.
