Cairo - Cairo's Al-Azhar University, Sunni Islam's top religious authority, has stated that the storage of human eggs is not forbidden by Islam, the government press reported yesterday.
"Sharia [Islamic law] does not ban the freezing of human eggs if they are subsequently fertilised by the husband's sperm in order to guarantee the paternity of the child," said Mr Ali Merei, dean of Al-Azhar's Islamic law faculty. But he warned that fertilising eggs fertilised with sperm from a third party was against Islamic law.
