Dublin drivers will be paying for Sunday parking from this weekend onwards due to the Corporation’s new parking charges scheme across the city.

A new hourly rate of £1.50 per hour for central Dublin - a rise of 50 pence - takes effect today along with a new zoning scheme that will see lower charges for areas of less demand.

The charge is a response to a Corporation survey that indicated 98 per cent of spaces were used on Sunday. It will not take effect in the morning so as to facilitate church-goers, say the Corporation.

Five tariffs have been set with charges ranging from £1.50 per hour to 50 pence per hour depending on the area.

"This is the first change in three years in the on-street tariff structure in the city" said Corporation Director of Traffic Mr Owen Keegan.

"The charge up to now in high-demand areas was significantly lower than off-street charges. This led to excessive on-street demand, which greatly curtailed the availability and turnover of spaces," he said.

Mr Keegan stressed that all revenue raised from the charges would be used exclusively for traffic-related spending, citing 12 area traffic-calming schemes and new traffic and pedestrian signals.

A leaflet outlining the new Zones and giving details of the new tariffs is available on request from the Office of the Director of Traffic in the Civic Offices, tel. 6722261.

The new hourly tariffs will be as follows:

  • Yellow Zone (very high demand area) - £1.50
  • Red Zone (high demand area) - £1.20
  • Green Zone (average demand area) - £1.00
  • Orange Zone (low demand area) - £0.80
  • Blue Zone (some suburban villages) - £0.50
