Witnesses said police and an armed truck driver had shot the gunman dead. Medical officials said the woman had died of wounds in hospital soon after the lunchtime attack.

Police also said a suspected Palestinian suicide bomber also blew himself up at a bus stop in a Jewish neighbourhood in north Jerusalem.

The bomber was killed and one woman wounded in the blast, which shattered the windows of a minibus in a section of Jerusalem occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.

The militant Islamic Jihad organization claimed responsibility for the blast.

There were also heavy exchanges of violence in the Palestinian-ruled West Bank town of Bethlehem, where Israeli tanks were moving towards the centre. Palestinian medics said one Palestinian had been killed in the fighting.

In other violence, the Islamic militant group Hamas said two members of its armed wing were killed by tank fire last night near the Jewish settlement of Netzarim in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli army also said it had arrested two suspected Palestinian suicide bombers near the West Bank town of Salfit, apparently while on their way to carry out an attack.

At least 1,074 Palestinians and 345 Israelis have died since the Palestinian uprising broke out after peace talks froze. Among them was an 11-year-old Palestinian girl from Gaza who died today, three days after she was shot in the head.
