Gardaí in Galway have arrested a number of students on public order offences during the university's annual “rag week”.
A Garda spokeswoman declined to confirm reports that up 37 students had been arrested in relation anti-social behaviour since the start of the week.
However, she said there had been a number of arrests in and around the city centre in the past few days.
Several students were arrested after bottles and other projectiles were thrown at fire crews who came to extinguish bonfires at the Dun na Coiribe estate on the Headford Road on Monday.
A number of residents on the estate complained to gardaí that they could not get in or out of the estate because of the crowds of students.
Yesterday, tNUI Galway president Dr Jim Browne called for an end to "college week" following complaints about unruly behaviour from members of the public.
University College Cork has restricted the licensing hours of bars on campus this year in an effort to avoid a repeat of last year’s anti-social behaviour during rag week.
