A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale shook Taiwan today, but there were no immediate reports of casualties and damage.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck about 4.40 p.m. local time, was about 22 miles east of Hualien in Taiwan's eastern coast at a depth of 17.4 miles, the Central Weather Bureau said.

Earthquakes happen often in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin. A quake measuring 6.3 struck northeastern Taiwan yesterday.
