REFUSE workers in South County Dublin have agreed to resume collection duties, after an appeal by their union SIPTU.
But they are also expected to vote overwhelmingly for official strike action when they meet at Liberty Hall this evening. The dispute affects all 66,000 homes in the council area.
It is over changes in work practices caused by the introduction of a "wheelie bin" system. Union negotiators are recommending a vote for industrial action at tonight's meeting and the union is likely to grant strike sanction, if, the 107 workers involved request it. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown collections are not affected.
Early yesterday morning the workers met a SIPTU branch official, Mr Terry Cowap, and agreed to end their unofficial action.
There have been no collections in the area since last Thursday. The workers walked off the job and mounted pickets at their de pot and Bohernabreena tip head because some of them had not received a £1,000 "lead in" payment for co operating with the early stages of the "wheelie bin" system.
