Toulouse - Rescue teams were working yesterday to reach 10 pot-holers trapped underground in south-west France, where storms this weekend killed 24 people and left whole villages devastated.

Hundreds of people had to be taken by helicopter from their homes. In the Aude department, local officials reported that between 300 and 500 litres of water per square metre had fallen in one day.

Explosives experts yesterday tried to blast their way towards three pot-holers near Rignac, trapped underground since Friday, but had to suspend work as waters began to rise.
