Two teenage girls narrowly escaped injury in west Belfast last night when a stolen car mounted the pavement.

The girls, aged 17 and 18, were walking along the Stewartstown Road when a Vauxhall Vectra drove onto the path towards them, causing them to dive for cover.

The car, which the police believe was stolen, then sped off toward Poleglass.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said car theft and joyriding were an "ongoing problem" in the area.
