The fall in the pound has made some euro-area countries "very upset" because it is causing them difficulties, European Commissioner for Internal Markets and Services Charlie McCreevy said in an interview with the Daily Mail.

"Some countries are very upset that you have a currency that has devalued nearly 30 percent in a short period of time," Mr McCreevy was quoted as saying to the newspaper. "It is causing difficulties for them."

McCreevy added that "some people even go as far as to say it is the policy of the British authorities to devalue the pound," the newspaper reported.

With approximately 50 per cent of domestic produce exports from the Republic destined for the UK market Irish exporters are among those dealing with the implications of weaker sterling.
