An Irishman who made a heroic effort to rescue Capt Scott and his comrades at the South Pole 100 years ago this year is to be honoured in his native west Cork next month with the unveiling of a sculpture.
Patrick Keohane shared a tent with Scott on his ill-fated Terra Nova expedition of 1911 to the South Pole, but he ended up being part of the first supporting group sent back by Scott to base camp at Cape Evans and thus avoided the tragic fate that befell Scott and four others.
Now he is to be honoured in his native Courtmacsherry: on August 19th Irish Arctic adventurer Dr Clare O’Leary will unveil a bronze statue of Mr Keohane, who died in the UK in 1950 at the age of 70.
