Ireland's failure to put into domestic law an EU maritime directive yesterday resulted in a ruling against the State in the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
The 1994 directive regulates the organisations responsible for carrying out inspections on ships visiting EU ports and the relevant activities of national maritime authorities. Transposition into national law was supposed to have been effected by the end of 1995.
In its defence the Government claimed it was preparing a ministerial order.
