THE Minister of State Mr Emmet Stagg will express the Government's concern about the latest incident at Sellafield when he meets the British ambassador to Ireland, Mrs Veronica Sutherland, today.
The incident occurred last Friday when British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) evacuated 53 workers from a section of the Sellafield plant, after a higher than normal degree of radioactivity was recorded. A company spokesman has said there was no leak of radioactive material.
Mr Stagg, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications, said yesterday this was the third incident at British nuclear plants of which his Department has been notified this year. He said the initial assessment of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland was that the incident had no health or radiological implications ford Ireland.
