A troubled eircom League season took another sensational twist this evening when the league authorities announced they were investigating St Patrick's Athletic for an irregularity "similar to that involved in the Paul Marney affair".
League commissioner Roy Dooney is currently in a meeting with St Pat's officials to determine the precise details.
It is understood that Shelbourne general manager Ollie Byrne was the one who brought the irregularity to the League's attention.
St Pat's have already been punished this season for playing midfielder Paul Marney while he was unregistered, but escaped an original mandatory nine-point deduction despite protests from other clubs - most notably Byrne's Shelbourne.
The new infringement is understood to have come to light after Byrne invoked rule 15 of the league's rulebook to access official documents.
A statement is expected to be made later when the meeting between Dooney and St Pat's is concluded.
