The relentless stylishness of the series of cookery books produced by the firm of Ryland, Peters and Small continues with Potatoes - From Gnocchi To Mash, by Annie Nichols, with fine photography by Peter Myers.

Ms Nichols follows the format of the RPS books - a previous volume concentrated on rice - by collating potato recipes from all over the world.

There are hasselbacks and Jannson's Temptation from Scandinavia, popiah from Malaysia, chicken curry with potatoes and milk from Thailand, roti and pakoras from India, tortitas from Mexico, and a host of others. These books very cleverly latch on to our modern passion for multi-cultural cooking at home, and if they don't break any new ground, they do serve the useful function of bringing a host of diverse recipes between the covers of one book.

Potatoes - From Gnocchi To Mash, published by Ryland Peters & Small, £16.99 in UK.
