A FAMILY of four suffered various degrees of poisoning after eating a cucumber that had been sprayed with a chemical which contained poison. The cucumber was bought in a Killiney, Co Dublin, supermarket.
Mr Declan Doyle, counsel for the family, told the Dublin Circuit Civil Court that Mrs Marguerite McConnell, Charleville Close, Rathmines, Dublin, and two of her daughters, Stephanie and Marguerite, had settled their damages claims.
He sought and was granted the court's approval of a £10,000 settlement offer to Fiona McConnell (16) by Super Dawn Fresh Vegetables Ltd, of Jordanstown, Lusk, Co Dublin, wholesale fruit and vegetable distributors.
Mr Doyle said the cucumber had been sprayed with a chemical substance known as Temik, which contained the poison Aldicarb.
Fiona retched violently and had acute diarrhoea after eating part of the cucumber on May 20th, 1992, and believed she was dying. She had been brought to hospital by ambulance and was detained until May 23rd.
Claims against Super Valu, Killiney; Super Valu and Centra Distribution Ltd; Fruit Importers of Ireland and Mr James Murray, trading as White Park Nurseries, vegetable growers, Rush, Co Dublin, were struck out.
