Spanish police said tonight they had seized 2.5 tonnes of cocaine worth tens of millions of euro hidden on a fishing boat near Tenerife.

Four Russian and Ukrainian crew members were arrested.

Police said that the drugs were so well hidden on the Panamanian-registered fishing boat Mars, that it took them several hours to find the contraband in a false bottom.

Fourteen other people, of various nationalities, were arrested in different parts of Spain as part of the operation, it said.

Spain, with its long coastline, has for years been viewed as an important entry point for Latin American cocaine to Europe.

The country ranks third behind Colombia and the United States in the amount of cocaine it seizes.
