A Spanish cargo plane with three people on board crashed in a mountainous part of the Basque country early today, Spanish national radio (RNE) said.
A spokesman for the Basque regional police said rescuers had been sent to the mountainous Zaldivar region, some 35 kilometres from the city of Bilbao and that locals had reported an explosion.
The Embraer 120 plane, which belonged to Spanish company Ibertrans, was flying from Madrid to Bilbao, northwestern Spain.
It lost contact with the control tower as it approached Bilbao to land, and a Basque police helicopter was sent to Zaldivar to search for it.
