Precision kicking from Louis Koen and a smart try from Stefan Terblanche sealed a 2-0 Test series victory for South Africa over Scotland at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Andy Craig's early try shook the Boks but the conditions, allied with superb performances from Joost van der Westhuizen and Koen, proved too much for the Scots.

The Springboks, who fought back from 25-12 down to win 29-25 in the first Test in Durban, made a positive start and were eager to keep the ball in hand.

However, after Koen missed an ambitious penalty attempt early on it was the tourists who scored a try completely against the run of play.

Koen's attempted pass to Marius Joubert was intercepted by Orrell centre Craig, who ran almost the length of the pitch to touch down, with Chris Paterson adding the extra points.

The try lifted Ian McGeechan's men and when Richard Bands was caught offside he presented Paterson with another easy penalty opportunity which he gobbled up.

Koen made it 10-3 with a 14th-minute penalty to keep the home side in touch and he added a drop goal within a minute, taking him to the 50-points mark in international rugby.

Penalties were then traded as Paterson was successful following a knock-on and Koen responded after Bruce Douglas was penalised.

Douglas made up for his indiscretion by bursting through from a lineout and handing off to Simon Taylor who was only stopped by a high tackle by Bakkies Botha and Paterson maintained his 100 per cent kicking record for the match to extend Scotland's lead to 16-9.

The Scots dominated possession as the half drew to a close with one excellent jinking run by Glenn Metcalfe almost outwitting the entire Springboks defence. Rudolf Straeuli's side started the second half with a bang as Stefan Terblanche touched down in the 41st minute after Jaco van der Westhuyzen's excellent fielding of Gregor Townsend's kick sparked a fast break. Koen added the conversion to give the home side the lead for the first time.

Koen notched three more points - this time from his own half - after Ashwin Willemse was hauled back by the scruff of his neck by Metcalfe but Paterson kept Scotland in touch to make it 22-19.

Koen cracked a further two penalties to move the lead up to nine points and take his personal tally to 23.

The altitude in Johannesburg seemed to be having an affect on Scotland despite the introduction of replacements.

The tourists were not following up their kicks as Willemse again broke through but passed forward with debutant Gcobani Bobo well placed to take the ball over the tryline.

Paterson missed a chance to bring Scotland back to within a converted try of the lead and only terrific tackling prevented Jaun Smith and Bobo again from touching down again as the match entered the final 10 minutes with the hosts well in control, but unable to convert that dominance into more tries.
