A 24-year-old man was charged with murdering his parents at a special sitting of Nenagh District Court last night.

A 24-year-old man was charged with murdering his parents at a special sitting of Nenagh District Court last night.

Mr Martin Doherty, of St Melia Street, Limerick, was charged with murdering William and Theresa Doherty at their home in Monadreen, Thurles, Co Tipperary, on Monday.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Sgt Sean Sherlock, who told Judge Mary Martin he had arrested Mr Doherty at 4.47 p.m. yesterday in Thurles Garda station. In reply to both charges, Mr Doherty said: "Nothing to say." He was remanded in custody to Limerick Court tomorrow.

Judge Martin asked: "Do you want to say anything at this stage?" Mr Doherty replied: "No".

The judge asked if he had been examined by a doctor. Mr Doherty's solicitor, Mr Brian Hughes, said his client's medical requirements had been met.

Supt Kevin Ludlow's request for Mr Doherty to be remanded in custody to Limerick Court on Thursday September 24th was met.

The judge asked the defendant if he was looking for free legal aid. He said he was. Mr Hughes was appointed at his request.

Asked by the judge if he needed further medical help, Mr Doherty said: "I would like to wash my hands and brush my teeth, thank you. Is it possible I could get my clothes sent to prison tomorrow? I have nothing."

Judge Martin said those arrangements would be made.
