Something More: Excavating Your Authentic Self by Sarah Ban Breathnach (Bantam, £12.99 in UK)

With a website, a charitable foundation and a publishing company founded on the strength of her runaway bestseller, Simple Abundance (plus five appearances on Oprah), this fifty-something American with an intriguingly Irish name seems to be taking over the women's self-help book market. This latest bestseller is an "archaeological dig" or a "sacred adventure" to find your "authentic self", which seems to involve reading anecdotes about women's lives and quotations from famous women, along with compiling what she terms an illustrated discovery journal - into which one is supposed to glue meaningful magazine pictures and describe or draw memories, hopes and dreams. Despite Patience Strong overtones, it will resonate with many career women and mothers who set out to have it all, only to find themselves doing it all, and for whom settling down has meant settling for.
