A PROMINENT Limerick solicitor has been fined €15,000 after a solicitor's disciplinary hearing, following an investigation by the Law Society.
The solicitor, John Devane, said the investigation began when the Law Society received a complaint stating he was late in serving legal documents on behalf of a client, who was taking civil proceedings against another individual.
"It was a mistake. I never said I was infallible and there isn't a single solicitor in the country who hasn't made a similar mistake and I immediately put my hands up," Mr Devane said.
"I explained the mistake to the client at the time and I have represented her since in other matters, so as far as I am concerned it is over and done with."
Law Society director general Ken Murphy said he could not comment on the hearing, which took place in Dublin at the end of last month as he is prohibited from doing so under legislation.
He said the results of every solicitor's disciplinary hearing are published monthly in the Law Society Gazette, and Mr Devane confirmed he expects details of his case will be published in full in the gazette at the end of this month.
