A NEWLY recruited soldier lost his hearing after just two days spent practising on a firing range, the High Court in Cork was yesterday on the opening day an action for damages against the Department of Defence.

The court was told that the hearing problems of Mr Kevin Reynolds (27), Fairfield Crescent, Farranree, Cork, did not develop over a long period but occurred after two days of shooting practice on the ranges in Kilworth army camp near Fermoy, Co Cork.

Mr Gerry Healy SC, said the plaintiff, who is married with two children, joined the army on August 3rd, 1988.

He successfully passed the army medical examinations, including a hearing test, and after completing a physical fitness course commenced firearms training.

He was sent to Kilworth ranges where he was firing an FN rifle for two days.

He was exposed to a considerable level of gunfire and, although he was provided with ear protectors, these were just ear plugs.

He was given no training in their proper use.

After the two days, Mr Reynolds was almost completely gear and was treated in the military hospital for three weeks. He also attended a hearing specialist, who told him he would not be able to withstand noise.

The trial continues today before Mr Justice Lavan.
