Met Eireann expects a moderate increase in temperatures during daylight hours this week but colder spells are expected overnight with more snow and sleet showers.

TODAY

Met Eireann said frost and fog with some freezing fog will be slow to clear today and will linger all day in some Midland areas. Otherwise some sunny spells will develop and it will be dry apart from a few wintry showers on Western and Northern coasts. Top temperatures generally as high as 3 to 5 degrees but close to or below freezing where fog persists.

The forecaster predicts bitterly cold temperatures tonight with frost and freezing fog returning. It will remain dry in most places but wintry showers will develop in Northern counties giving some accumulations of snow. Lowest temperatures are expected to be minus 6 to minus 9 degrees.

OUTLOOK

Tuesday will be a generally dry day with further wintry showers affecting mainly coastal areas. There will be some bright spells at times but it will remain cold with highest temperatures of only -1 to 3 degrees.

Tuesday night is expected to be bitterly cold again with lowest temperatures of minus 3 to minus 9 degrees giving a widespread severe frost.

More wintry showers or longer outbreaks of sleet or snow are expected in parts of the north and northwest on Wednesday. There will be drier and brighter weather elsewhere.

The warmest temperatures (4 to 6 degrees) are expected in the west of the country;  while in the east maximum values will be between 2 and 4 degrees.

Thursday and Friday will be dry for many areas but there will be some showers or sleety rain at times in the North. It will become a little less cold but still below normal.
