Beirut - The chief of Israel's proxy South Lebanon Army (SLA) militia freed a Lebanese woman yesterday after she had spent 10 years in prison for shooting and wounding him in an assassination attempt.

An SLA statement said Mr Antoine Lahd, Israel's main Lebanese ally, released Ms Soha Bishara from the militia's notorious Khiam jail for humanitarian reasons. Ms Bishara, a potent symbol of resistance to Israel's occupation of parts of south Lebanon, arrived in Beirut in a vehicle of the International Committee of the Red Cross hours after her release.
