At least 16 people have been killed after a commuter bus and a lorry crashed in the central Nigerian state of Kwara.

Local police said the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle in the central town of Jebba on Wednesday when it hit the lorry, killing 16 of the 19 passengers on board.

The accident occurred near a village where 25 people were killed in a crash last month when two lorries collided on a narrow bridge.

Road accidents are frequent on Nigeria's extensive but poorly maintained road network. Police usually blame unqualified drivers and speeding for accidents.
