A man can no longer smile and has been left with permanent paralysis and deafness after a vicious assault by two brothers, one of whom has received a six-year sentence at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

John Quigley (33), of Mulacreevie Park, Armagh, had been living in Carn Ard, Circular Road, Galway, when he assaulted a 26-year-old student and part-time barman at Gaelcarrig Park, Newcastle, on August 27th, 2001.

He and his brother were arrested at the time, but John Quigley absconded to Northern Ireland and had to be extradited to the Republic.

Det Garda Barry Carolan told the court yesterday the Quigleys assaulted the victim because he was a barman at Doc Watson’s pub, Westside, at which their sister had been refused service previously.
