Three people, including two children, remain in a critical condition after a head-on car crash that killed six, police said today.

A nine-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy are being treated for serious injuries. The collision occurred last night close to the Broadwell turning on the A429 between Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire police confirmed five people were declared dead at the scene and four more were taken to hospital.

A sixth person, a 61-year-old woman, died in hospital early today. Police believe the crash happened when a grey Peugeot 306 travelling northbound tried to overtake a red Kia, colliding head-on with a green VW Passat.

Police today said the boy was being treated at Bristol's Frenchay hospital for head injuries, and the girl at Bristol Children's Hospital for abdominal injuries.

The woman, believed to be 34, was receiving treatment for chest injuries at Gloucestershire Royal hospital.

A police statement said: "All four occupants of the grey Peugeot 306 involved were pronounced dead at the scene.

"They are believed to be a 35-year-old man, a 15-year-old girl, a 31-year-old woman, all thought to be from Moreton-in-Marsh, and a 20-year-old man, from the Chipping Norton area.
