The Simpsonsis to become the longest running comedy in United States television history after the cartoon was extended until 2005.
Fox has given the go-ahead for two more seasons, taking the show to its 16th series and 360th episode.
The deal pushes it past the record set by The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet, the wholesome, 1950s family comedy starring real-life couple Ozzie and Harriet Nelson.
Despite over 14 years on air, The Simpsonsremains the most popular Sunday night TV programme in America and was recently nominated for a Golden Globe award for best comedy.
The subversive show is credited with redefining the TV sitcom during the 1990s, breaking away from the mild-mannered conventions of the family comedy.
Ms Gail Berman from Fox Entertainment said: The Simpsonscould become "the most extraordinary television show . . . in the history of the medium. In its 14th season, the show is doing some of its funniest episodes and best numbers," she told showbusiness trade paper Variety.
