Wiesenthal's activities as an avenging angel of Nazi atrocities are world famous by now, but Hella Pick - who is herself a wartime refugee from Austria - places them in the context of a long life (Wiesenthal is 87 this year). Born a Viennese Jew, he saw the horrors of the concentration camps at first hand, including a spell in Plaszow, the Polish camp depicted in Schindler's List. To lay bare the truth about these horror centres became his life's mission, and he also swore to himself that he would seek out the surviving guilty ones and bring them to trial. Apart from his chosen avenger's role, Wiesenthat has been influential in encouraging emigration to Israel and even drew on his early training as an architect to design a mausoleum there housing the ashes of Holocaust victims (it was never built). A harrowing story, but one which should not be ducked.
