A number of high-velocity shots were heard by a joint British army/RUC patrol operating close to the Border in south Fermanagh near the town of Roslea on Sunday night, writes Security Correspondent,
Jim Cusack. The RUC said there were no injuries and the patrol could not say if it had been targeted.
The sound of the shots came from south of the Border in the direction of Scotstown, Co Monaghan, but it was possible that it was
"vermin destruction" rather than any form of gun attack, a spokeswoman said.
The location of the attack may give some rise for concern as the
Scotstown area of Co Monaghan is home to a number of highly militant republican figures, some known to be opposed to the IRA ceasefire.
The Continuity Army Council IRA splinter group has also been active in this area in the past.
