A shotgun was pointed at gardaí chasing a gang who attempted to rob a shop in Ashbourne, Co Meath in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí said a patrol car was called to the scene at Curragha, Ashbourne at 2.45 a.m. in response to an alarm.

As officers approached the rear of the premises, they were confronted by three men in a dark blue car that had been reported stolen from Ratoath earlier.

The stolen car rammed the patrol car and a shotgun was pointed at the gardaí.

They were unable to follow and the raiders escaped.

Both the patrol car and the shop were damaged in the raid, but nothing was stolen.
