A DRUG courier who was shot in the leg some time after gardai relieved him of £500,000 worth of heroin has been remanded in custody for sentence by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Alan Costelloe threw his pedal cycle at Drugs Squad members in an attempt to escape a Garda trap he rode into at Finglas. There was a plastic bag containing heroin on the handlebars, Det Sgt Noirin O'Sullivan said.
He told gardai he was acting as a courier to pay off a debt but was too frightened to name the major dealer who hired him.
While on bail he was shot in the leg but refused through fear to make an official complaint to gardai.
Costelloe, married and a father of two, of Cromcastle Road, Dublin, pleaded guilty to having the heroin for supply on 15th, 1994.
Judge Michael Moriarty said that before imposing sentence he wanted to read all the papers in the case and to review other sentences for similar amounts. He remanded Costelloe in custody to February 19th next.
