Shorts is working to reduce the up to 2,000 redundancies in the North announced by Canadian parent company Bombardier after the September 11th terrorist attacks.

The Belfast aerospace company is looking at "repatriating" work it sub-contracted worldwide when it was working to full capacity before the attacks, a company spokesman said today.

"We are looking to see if we can bring some of that work back into the company to save some jobs. We will bring it back if it makes sound business sense," he said.

The company is also talking with the British government about low-risk loan guarantees which, if agreed, would save jobs next year.

But whatever the company does, over 1,000 jobs at least are going. Already 350 subcontractors and temporary staff have left and a further 200 temporary staff are set to go by the end of the Shorts financial year on January 31st.

Talks are under way with the unions over a first wave of 480 redundancies among full-time staff. PA
