A laboratory in Co Kildare is to carry out genetic tests to compare hairs taken from Shergar over 10 years ago with the remains of a horse found in Co Donegal, according to a report today in the London Times.
The hairs, taken from the £10 million Derby winner by souvenir hunting veterinary students, will allow the laboratory test claims from what are reported as "genuine contacts" that horse remains found in Co Donegal are those of the famous horse.
Shergar was stolen from the Aga Khan's Ballymany stud in broad daylight in 1983. What happened to the 10 length winner of the 1981 Derby has remained a mystery ever since.
Gardai in Co Donegal last night said they had no reports of any horse remains, said to be those of Shergar, being found in the county.
