There were 15,689 new private cars licensed in June, 2001 compared with 23,874 in June, 2000, a decrease of 34.3 per cent, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office this morning.

In the first six months of 2001, there were 115,086 new private cars licensed, a decrease of 27.4 per cent on the corresponding period last year.

First licensing of second-hand private cars decreased by 909 (-41.4 per cent) on the same month last year and decreased by 4,802 (-36.1 per cent) in the year to date.

New goods vehicles licensed decreased by 664 (-20.3 per cent) in June, 2001 when compared with June, 2000, and decreased by 911 (-4.6 per cent) in the first six months of 2001 by comparison with the same period last year.

The vehicle licensing figures also show that:

  • In the period January-June 2001, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 158,771 compared with 208,238 in the same period last year, a decrease of 23.8 per cent.
  • There was a decrease of 31.1 per cent in the total number of new vehicles licensed in June, 2001 in comparison with the corresponding month last year.
  • The highest number of new private cars licensed in June, classified by make are Ford (2,073) followed by Volkswagen (1,733), Toyota (1,482), Nissan (1,465), Opel (1,282) and Fiat (1,228).
