Ankara - The Turkish parliament failed to elect a president in a second-round vote yesterday, with the opposition-backed government candidate, Mr Ahmet Necdet Sezer, still leading the race.
Mr Sezer, the head of the constitutional court, received the support of 314 deputies in the 550-member house, falling short of the 367 votes required. The closest runner-up, parliament speaker Mr Yildirim Akbulut, received 88 votes.
