One in Four, a national charity which supports victims of sexual violence, collected more than €80,000 at St Stephen's Green today during the 'Silver Mile', the organisation's most important charity event.
Replacing standard street collections, donations of two euro coins were placed side-by-side around the perimeter of park.
The campaign got off to a healthy head start with two anonymous donations totalling €26,000.
All cash collected will fund the group's therapy and advocacy programmes, which support hundreds of men and women who suffered sexual abuse each year. The charity also runs outreach perpetrator assessment and treatment programmes.
"This is our biggest fundraising event of the year," said Deride Fitzpatrick, advocacy director. "We are still counting money and taking donations so we hope to raise €125,000 which would make the full mile.
"Last year we collected 50,000 euro with the coins circling two fifths of the park."
Students from nearby Loreto College, who had just opened their Junior Cert results, and Youthreach members throughout Dublin also collected money for the cause.
The charity currently delivers some 5,000 psychotherapy sessions annually, and supports a further 500 women and men through its advocacy programmes.
Despite receiving 50 per cent of its funding through Government grants, it relies heavily on donations to raise an additional €400,000 a year.
