A POWERFUL car bomb killed at least seven people and injured 68 others in a working-class district of Algiers yesterday, according to a first official toll.

It was the second such attack in a week, following a murderous car bombing in the city centre on Monday blamed on Islamic extremists.

Most of the victims in the Hussein Dey district yesterday were passers-by, young people and drivers.

On Monday, suspected Islamic fundamentalists struck a crowded street in central Algiers with another car bomb attack, killing at least three people and injuring 70 others.

The attack came days after the prime Minister, Mr Ahmed Ouyahia, stated the authorities had terrorism under control. The Armed Islamic Group has recently reimposed a reign of terror over the Kasbah, the city's old quarter.
