'Sesame Street' gets new Northern residents as muppets move to Belfast

A NEW version of Sesame Streetdesigned specifically for Northern Ireland called Sesame Tree - aired for the first time on Saturday morning.

The programme introduced new muppet characters like Potto, Hilda and Claribelle, as well as featuring old children's favourites like Elmo, Bert and Ernie and the Cookie Monster.

Produced in Belfast by Sixteen South in conjunction with the Jim Henson workshop, which produced the original US version, the new programmes are designed to link in with the North's primary school curriculum and aims to promote an appreciation of diversity and common humanity.

Colin Williams, the series executive producer in Belfast, said: "The series is beautifully rich in local culture and completely current with teaching based on the new Northern Ireland curriculum.

"The characters, stories, and whole concept is very innovative and really charming. We know the children of Northern Ireland will have as much fun watching the series as we had making it."

He also said the programmes combine new muppets developed specially for the local audience, live action sequences filmed across Northern Ireland and "classic Sesame Street moments".

A range of voices and faces will be featured, including children from the North's Polish, Chinese and African communities.
