GARDAI are treating as suspicious the death of a six month old baby girl who was brought to hospital in Cork city with serious injuries late on Saturday night. She died some hours later.
The State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, arrived in Cork yesterday afternoon to carry out a postmortem on the body of Vanessa Kelly from Mount Vernon, Douglas.
Neighbours said the dead baby's two older sisters, two year old Melissa and Donna (6), ran into a nearby house a short time before 10 p.m. on Saturday.
The child's father, Mr Fergus Whitty, and a neighbour brought the baby to hospital. She was understood to have a broken arm and hip, cracked ribs and a cut lip. She was admitted to the South Infirmary Hospital before being transferred to Cork University Hospital a short time later where she died at 7 a.m. yesterday.
The child's mother, Ms Yvonne Kelly, and her two other daughters were staying with relatives yesterday and were understood to be distressed.
