French police have recovered more than €9 million in cash stolen from a security van in Lyon last week.

State prosecutor Xavier Richaud today said police found €9.2 million hidden in a garage that the security van driver, Toni Musulin, had rented under a false name.

Mr Musulin was working for a security firm in the southern city of Lyon when he vanished on November 5th in an armoured van carrying cash from the Bank of France.

Police originally thought he might have been kidnapped, but soon discovered Mr Musulin's flat had been cleared and his bank account emptied days before the robbery.

"He (Mr Musulin) is still on the run with more than €2 million," Mr Richaud told reporters.

Mr Musulin has become a household name in France, with fan clubs appearing across the Internet.

Media commentators called it the perfect crime and police speculated at first that he might have already escaped abroad.

But the garage was only rented until December, meaning Mr Musulin expected to return to the Lyon area to get his stash.

If caught, Mr Musulin faces a maximum three-year prison term as he did not use violence to steal the cash.
