The jury in the longest-running criminal trial in the history of the State of five men accused of a €2.28 million “tiger kidnapping” robbery has retired for the third night without reaching any verdict.
The jury sat at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court until 9pm tonight but the foreman told Judge Tony that no decision had been reached so far on any of the 25 charge before it.
It is 65 days since the case began, making it the longest criminal trial in the history of the State and the jury has deliberated so far for almost 16 hours. The jurors sat until late at their own request before being sent home.
One juror has a holiday booked for Friday afternoon but Judge Tony Hunt reminded them that “there are no deadlines or perceptions of a deadline” in this case.
“The last set of verdicts deserves the same attention as the first,” he told the jury of five men and six women.
David Byrne (36) of Old Brazeel Way, Knocksedan, Swords; Niall Byrne (27), of Aughavanagh Road, Crumlin; Mark Farrelly (37), of Moatview Court, Priorswood; Christopher Corcoran (61), of Bayside Boulevard North, Sutton; and Jason Kavanagh (34), of Parslickstown Court, Ladyswell have each pleaded not (NOT) guilty to five charges.
They deny falsely imprisoning the Mr Paul Richardson, his wife and their two sons on March 13th and 14th, 2005.
They have also pleaded not guilty to robbing €2.28 million from Mr Richardson and Securicor on the same date.
