A second person has appeared in court in Limerick charged in connection with a kidnapping incident in the city nearly two weeks ago.

Zachary Coughlan-Ryan (34), no fixed abode, appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court yesterday.

He is charged with the false imprisonment of Stephen Cusack (19) between August 19th and August 20th last at Caisleán na hAbhann, Castletroy, Limerick.

Det Garda Vincent Brick gave evidence of arresting and formally charging Mr Coughlan- Ryan at Henry Street Garda station on Wednesday night. Judge Aeneas McCarthy was told he made no reply to the charge.

Solicitor Michael O’Donnell was assigned to represent Mr Coughlan-Ryan, who was granted free legal aid.

Det Garda Brick said gardaí objected to bail because of the seriousness of the charge, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison if tried on indictment.

During the bail application, Mr Coughlan- Ryan took the witness stand where he said he was innocent of the charge. Judge McCarthy refused bail and remanded him in custody until September 9th, when he is due to appear before the same court via video link.

Last week a 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Limerick District Court where he was also charged with the false imprisonment of Mr Cusack.
