A second man has died following an incident in an underground chamber at a grain store in Co Louth yesterday morning.
The man (35) had been in a critical condition since the accident at the Knockbridge branch of Drummonds Ltd, the largest purchaser of grain in the Dublin, Louth and Meath region. He died early this morning.
Another man, Terry Brennan (19) of Knockcor, Knockbridge, died earlier after also becoming trapped in the underground chamber adjacent to a grain silo.
Two units of Dundalk Fire Brigade were called to the store just before 9.30am yesterday. Four fire officers wearing breathing apparatus entered the chamber, where the air was not breathable, and recovered the two men.
A third man was also taken to hospital suffering from shock.
Investigations are under way by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the Garda.
Elsewhere, a man died after becoming trapped under machinery at a factory in Co Down.
The incident at the industrial premises in Rooney Road, Kilkeel, happened at about 6pm yesterday. The man, in his 40s, was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry where he later died.
