A second body has been removed from the underwater wreckage of an Air France plane which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean nearly two years ago, French police said today.

A remote-controlled submarine raised a body which was still strapped into an airline seat some 12,000ft to the surface today. The remains of another victim were retrieved yesterday.

Police said the recovery team removed the entire seat from the water with the "greatest dignity
under difficult conditions".

Air France Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to Paris went down on June 1st, 2009, killing all 228 people on board – including three Irish women.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. Fifty other bodies were found in the water shortly after the crash.

Among the victims of the disaster were Dr Jane Deasy (27), Rathgar, Dublin, Dr Aisling Butler (26), Roscrea, Co Tipperary, and Dr Eithne Walls (28), Ballygowan, Co Down. The three were returning from a holiday in Brazil.
