The SDLP today called on Northern Ireland's police chief to declare publicly that his officers will no longer fire plastic bullets.
Nationalists and republicans have already insisted on the controversial anti-riot weapon's abolition during talks to break the deadlocked peace process.
But SDLP representatives have now urged Chief Constable Hugh Orde to pledge an end to all use and halt any new purchases while the debate continues to rage.
Although 16 people have been killed by baton rounds during the Troubles, police have not fired any since September 2002.
SDLP policing spokesman Mr Alex Attwood stressed to Mr Orde at a meeting in Belfast that the improved security climate meant they had to go. "We told him they had to be withdrawn, but if he didn't agree to that he should announce an intention not to use.
"This was one of the most serious conversations we have had with him. He heard our arguments and I think we are making progress."
The British government has been looking at alternatives to plastic bullets and has commissioned research.
One possibility under consideration is a soft-nosed round designed to inflict less serious injury on targets.
Irritant pellets which could overwhelm troublemakers without causing them serious harm are also being studied.
