Scotland 21 South Africa 6
Scotland clinched their first victory over South Africa in 33 years with a magnificent performance at Murrayfield this afternoon.
The Scots competed on equal terms in the first half, which finished all square at 6-6, but stepped up a gear after the interval to record only their fourth win against the Springboks in 13 attempts.
Flanker Budge Pountney and winger Nikki Walker touched down for second-half tries while New Zealand-born centre Brendan Laney booted 11 points.
Number eight Simon Taylor broke from the back of a scrum in the 68th minute, setting up another promising position for the Scots, but they had to do with a penalty after foul play from the Springboks at the breakdown.
Laney failed to keep his kick on-target and the score remained 16-6 but with South Africa failing to get their hands on the ball, the lead was relatively comfortable.
Scotland should have extended their lead in the 73rd minute when Greeff spilled another bomb right into the path of Laney who fed Walker but the Borders winger dropped the pass with the line begging.
Walker made amends just a minute later though when Springbok substitute Andre Pretorius attempted to run the ball from behind his own posts but the Lions outside-half ran into danger and flung out a wild pass which Walker dived on for a try.
Laney missed the conversion but Scotland had enough done as South Africa spent the remaining minutes battering a heroic home defence with no reward, signalling the end to a memorable afternoon for McGeechan's men.
